Flying to Qatar

One of the most popular options for travel from Dubai to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup is by flight. 

For soccer fans to watch the game without having to spend on accommodation in Doha, the low-cost carrier flydubai is making as many as 30 trips to Doha each day. The Match Day Shuttle flights travel from Dubai World Central (DWC) to Doha International Airport; the flight time is an hour and ten minutes. 

Wondering how much do flydubai Match Day Shuttle flights cost? According to flydubai’s website, a return flight has a starting price of USD 258 (AED 948) in Economy class and USD 998 (AED 3,666) in Business class. You can book these flights on flydubai’s official website.

You’ll also need to follow these guidelines when using the Dubai to Qatar World Cup flights by flydubai:

  • Visitors will need their match tickets and Hayya card in hand to board the flight. 
  • Fans must arrive in Doha at least four hours before the match kickoff time.
  • Only hand baggage is allowed aboard the flydubai World Cup flights; the allowance is 7 kg for Economy Class and 14 kg for Business Class.
  • Visitors using Match Day shuttle flights have a maximum stay restriction of next-day return. 

flydubai will also be operating its scheduled flights to Doha from Dubai International Airport. Other airlines flying to Doha are Qatar Airways, Emirates and other popular international airlines.

Driving to Qatar

However, flight prices are increasing as the FIFA World Cup in Qatar kicks off. Given this, many football enthusiasts are considering driving to Qatar for the World Cup matches.

If you plan to drive to Qatar, remember that the country only shares one land border with Saudi Arabia. You’ll be able to enter Qatar through the Abu Samra crossing on Salwa Road. It will take 6 to 7 hours to travel the 650 miles from Dubai to Doha. On other hand, the journey from Abu Dhabi is only about 550 kilometres long and can be completed in less than 6 hours. The open border crossing can accommodate 4,000 travellers per hour and offers free parking.

Rules for driving to Qatar during the World Cup 2022

However, between 1 November 2022 (Tuesday) and 23 December 2022 (Friday), only vehicles with Qatari registration numbers will be permitted to enter the nation for day visits, according to the Interior Ministry of Qatar. 

Visitors who do not have a Qatari licence plate must pre-reserve a parking spot at the border; this will be free for the first 24 hours from the time of entering the country. There will be shuttle buses to take them to Doha Central Station or the Al Qalayel meeting point. However, reserving a border parking spot on the second day will cost QAR 1,000. 

Visitors can also enter Qatar in their own vehicles, as long as they adhere to strict guidelines and obtain special authorisations: 

  • The car must have a minimum of three people and a maximum of six people; all of them will need to have the Hayya card.
  • The driver must also have a hotel reservation in Qatar for a minimum of five nights. 
  • Using the Hayya to Qatar 2022 app, visitors can apply for an entrance permit (AED 5,043) and car insurance.

Please also keep in mind these other guidelines when travelling to Qatar: 

  • Fans arriving by bus will be dropped off at the border terminal; they will also need a Hayya card to enter the country. After admission formalities, visitors can board the free bus to Al Messila Metro Station in Doha or the shuttle bus to Al Qalayel.
  • Although Qatar’s borders are closed to non-World Cup attendees, humanitarian cases will be exempted. 

What is the Hayya Card?

If you want to travel from Dubai to attend the 2022 FIFA World Cup, you must have a valid match ticket and a Hayya card. The Hayya card is a Fan ID that will grant you entry into Qatar and the stadiums where the matches will take place. You will also enjoy free access to metro and bus services on match days.

  • Between 1 November 2022 to 23 January 2023, everyone entering Qatar must have a Hayya card, even individuals below the age of 18 years.
  • The Hayya card can take up to five days to be approved.
  • There are two types of Hayya cards: match day entry permit and regular entry permit.

During the World Cup 2022, visitors to Qatar do not need to apply for a visa; only the Hayya card is necessary to enter the country. 

Hayya cardholders will also be able to visit Oman and Saudi Arabia for 60 days. The UAE has also introduced a new multiple-entry visa for owners of Hayya Cards. This will cost AED 100 and is valid for up to 90 days for visitors going to Dubai during the World Cup.

How to apply for the Hayya card

Ticket-holders can apply online at the Hayya portal or via the Hayya to Qatar 2022 mobile application, which is available for download on iOS and Android. Make sure to also download the Hayya app to access your card after it has been approved.
